Bitdefender, a global leader in cybersecurity, has announced the acquisition of Mesh Security Limited, a company specializing in advanced email protection solutions. This strategic move will enable Bitdefender to integrate Mesh’s defense capabilities into its Extended Detection and Response (XDR) platform and its Managed Detection and Response (MDR) services, thus strengthening its position against one of today’s biggest threats: email.
The agreement, which is still subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approval, aims to combat the increasing volume of attacks using email as a gateway for ransomware, phishing, and Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams.
According to the FBI’s 2024 Cyber Crime report, American companies reported losses nearing $2.8 billion due to BEC fraud. Meanwhile, the Bitdefender Cybersecurity Assessment Report 2024 identified phishing and social engineering as the top threats highlighted by cybersecurity professionals surveyed globally.
A Dual Approach to Email Protection
Mesh’s solution stands out for its dual architecture: it combines a Secure Email Gateway (SEG) to protect the perimeter, along with mailbox-level defense through API-based implementation. This combination allows for much deeper visibility into threats, contributing high-quality telemetry to Bitdefender’s global threat intelligence network.
Mesh’s technology will be integrated into GravityZone, Bitdefender’s flagship platform that unifies security, compliance, and risk analytics. This integration not only enhances the company’s detection and response capabilities against email threats but also facilitates centralized management, especially designed for Managed Service Providers (MSPs).
Added Value for the MSP Channel
Bitdefender has a network of over 41,000 channel partners and MSPs worldwide. The addition of Mesh further enhances this ecosystem, as its solution has been designed from the ground up to adapt to multi-tenant environments, with efficient management tools, 24/7 protection, automated policies, and real-time visibility into active threats.
“We are very pleased to announce our intention to acquire Mesh, a strategic move that complements our GravityZone XDR platform and strengthens our MDR service to help businesses confront persistent email threats,” said Andrei Florescu, President and CEO of Bitdefender’s Enterprise Solutions Group. “Mesh brings cutting-edge innovation and a highly experienced team that shares our vision of practical and effective security.”
A Future-Focused Union
Founded in 2020 and backed by Elkstone and Enterprise Ireland, Mesh has quickly established itself as a trusted provider in the email security space, collaborating with hundreds of MSPs and protecting thousands of businesses globally. Its focus on effectiveness, simplicity, and ease of integration has made it a highly valued solution in the industry.
For Brian Byrne, CEO and co-founder of Mesh, this acquisition marks the beginning of a new chapter: “We have always worked to create email security solutions that simply work. Bitdefender shares that same philosophy, and we are excited to join forces and bring even more robust protection to an even greater number of organizations.”
The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, but industry experts believe this acquisition positions Bitdefender favorably in response to the growing demand for comprehensive solutions against email threats, a vector that remains the weakest link in enterprise cybersecurity.
