AMD Captures 80% of CPU Market on Amazon U.S. and Quintupled Intel’s Revenue

AMD’s dominance is solidified with the Ryzen range, particularly the X3D models, against an Intel that struggles to remain at the top of sales with its Core Ultra 200S processors.

AMD has achieved a new milestone in its historic competition with Intel: nearly complete domination of processor sales on Amazon in the United States. According to data from March 2025, the California-based company captured 78.74% of the total CPUs sold on the platform, with more than 31,600 units shipped. In contrast, Intel barely reached 7,500 units (21.26%), a difference that was also reflected in revenue: AMD generated approximately $7.8 million, while Intel did not exceed $1.5 million.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the undisputed market leader

The best-selling processor of the month was the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which surpassed 6,000 units and is expected to approach 7,000 by the end of the month. This model, at an average price of $479, has become the preferred choice for gamers and content creators seeking superior performance without moving up to the HEDT range.

Despite the presence of next-generation processors like the Ryzen 9000, the AM4 models continue to maintain high sales volumes, proof that the ecosystem still has a large user base. One of the standout models has been the Ryzen 5 5500, a 6-core chip priced under $90, which positioned it as the second best-selling CPU of the month.

Other popular models in the ranking included the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and the Ryzen 5 7600X, the latter being the best-selling Zen 4 non-X3D, as well as the Ryzen 9 9900X, the only model from the Ryzen 9000 series to break into the top ten.

Intel, with a minimal presence in the top 10

Intel, for its part, managed to place only two models in the top 10 best-selling CPUs on Amazon U.S.: the Core i5 12400F and the Core i7 12700K. The latter, with 12 cores and 24 threads, sold at an average price of $234 and achieved over 1,000 units. Despite its competitive performance-to-price ratio, these models belong to the Alder Lake generation, which was launched in 2021.

On the other hand, the new Core Ultra 200S range has been deemed a sales failure. The Core Ultra 7 265K was the only standout model from this line, with just over 500 units sold.

Price as a decisive factor

One of the key elements explaining AMD’s success over Intel is its tight pricing strategy, especially in the mid and low ranges. While Intel has focused on innovations in AI and integrated graphics in its latest chips, consumers continue to prioritize raw performance and cost per core.

The Ryzen 5000 and 7000 series continues to generate interest among builders for its maturity, stability, and value for money. The backward compatibility of AM4 motherboards also helps extend the life cycle of these CPUs and keeps upgrade costs low.

Market outlook for CPUs in 2025

The global processor market remains under pressure due to the international economic context and the slowdown in the PC market. However, AMD has managed to maintain and even expand its market share in the retail channel, especially in the consumer segment.

Intel, for its part, remains strong in sectors such as data centers, embedded devices, and the enterprise industry, but faces a growing challenge to regain ground in the domestic and enthusiast markets, where AMD has surpassed it in both technology and sales.

With the imminent arrival of new releases and the integration of artificial intelligence technologies in next-generation chips, the competition between both giants promises to intensify in the coming quarters.
