Hetzner Invests in Renewable Energy with the Creation of HT Clean Energy GmbH

Hetzner Online GmbH, a leading company in hosting and cloud solutions, has taken a decisive step toward energy sustainability with the founding of HT Clean Energy GmbH, a new company created in collaboration with Joshua Tlapak, founder of MHB Montage GmbH. This initiative will focus on the operation of solar parks and large-scale energy storage, aiming to fully supply Hetzner’s data centers with self-generated renewable energy.

The first major project of HT Clean Energy GmbH is already underway in Nassau-Weikersheim, Germany. This solar park, which will cover 7 hectares, is expected to generate approximately 6.5 MW of electricity, enough to power over 1,800 homes each year. Additionally, the company is already planning other projects with the same sustainable focus.

A Commitment to Sustainability in Data Centers

Data centers are the backbone of the interconnected digital world. From browsing the internet to massive data processing and running critical applications, their importance is undeniable. However, the exponential growth in demand for computing capacity also means increased energy consumption.

In light of this challenge, Hetzner has focused on innovative solutions that optimize energy efficiency in its facilities. According to Christian Fitz, the company’s spokesperson, “by using modern cooling technology, we manage to cool our servers with outside air for up to 358 days a year, which represents significant energy savings.”

Since 2008, Hetzner has powered its servers in Germany with 100% hydropower, while in Finland, it also utilizes wind energy. Now, with the creation of HT Clean Energy GmbH, the company aims to achieve energy self-sufficiency in its data centers by exclusively using its own renewable sources.

A Model for Sustainable Digitalization

The launch of this new company not only reinforces Hetzner’s commitment to clean energy but also represents a model for the tech industry to follow. “Our goal is to ensure that our data centers can meet the growing energy demand without compromising the environment. By generating our own renewable electricity, we take on the responsibility of providing sustainable IT infrastructure to our customers,” emphasized Martin Hetzner, the company’s founder.

In addition to advancing energy independence, this strategy contributes to Germany’s energy transition goals, reinforcing the role of clean technologies in digital transformation. Hetzner seeks to establish new standards in green IT, demonstrating that technological innovation and ecological responsibility can go hand in hand.
