AWS Expands Its Infrastructure in Africa with a New Wavelength Zone in Casablanca

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the general availability of its first Wavelength Zone in North Africa, in collaboration with telecommunications operator Orange. This new infrastructure will enable developers, businesses, and independent software vendors (ISVs) to deploy applications with low latency, increased resilience, and compliance with data residency requirements in Morocco.

AWS Wavelength: Optimizing Performance and Security in the Cloud

The AWS Wavelength technology, integrated into 5G networks of telecommunications providers, allows customers to access computing and storage services at the edge of the network. This minimizes latency and reduces the need for multiple network hops to connect 5G devices to applications hosted on AWS. Located within Orange’s data centers, the new Wavelength Zone in Casablanca provides developers with an optimized platform for critical applications such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud gaming, and fraud detection.

AWS Wavelength also offers the same cloud security as an AWS region, with automation tools and infrastructure consistent with industry best practices.

Global Expansion and Adoption of Wavelength Zones

Since launching its first Wavelength Zone in Los Angeles in 2019 in partnership with Verizon, AWS has expanded this technology to multiple international markets. Currently, there are operational Wavelength Zones in 19 cities across the United States, with additional deployments in the UK with BT and Vodafone, in South Korea with SK Telecom, in Germany with Vodafone, in Japan with KDDI, and in Canada with Bell Canada.

In Spain, Telefónica has announced trials with a Wavelength Zone in Madrid, although its official launch has not yet been finalized. Vodafone has also indicated its intention to implement a similar zone in the country.

Infrastructure in Casablanca: A Strategic Base

Orange, a key partner in the expansion of AWS Wavelength in Morocco, operates two data centers in Casablanca, including the DC2, which was acquired in 2021 following the purchase of a 1MW facility from Etix Everywhere. This infrastructure will enable businesses and developers to access advanced cloud computing solutions with low latency and more efficient integration with local 5G networks.

The arrival of AWS Wavelength in Casablanca represents a significant advancement in the digital infrastructure of North Africa, facilitating the digital transformation of multiple sectors and strengthening the region’s technological ecosystem.
