The company Alaska Power & Telephone (AP&T), a utility provider with nearly seven decades of experience in Alaskan communities, has announced the acquisition of a majority stake in SEALink Networks, Inc. (SNI).
SNI is in the process of developing a submarine cable landing station in Westport, Washington, aimed at improving telecommunications infrastructure and ensuring robust connectivity between Alaska and the contiguous 48 states of the U.S.
The submarine cables to be installed will replace outdated infrastructure used by AP&T and other operators, allowing residents, businesses, and communities in Alaska to access high-quality broadband services.
A Strategic Bet for Alaska’s Digital Future
The chair of AP&T’s board of directors, Robert B. Engel, emphasized that this operation is the result of years of strategic planning. “We have taken deliberate actions in our business strategies, resource allocation, and the incorporation of executive talent to ensure the sustainable growth of the company,” Engel explained.
Meanwhile, AP&T’s CEO, Bill Marks, stressed the importance of this project:
“The demand for broadband and data transmission services through fiber optics is growing exponentially. We have focused on addressing the need to renew and enhance connectivity in Alaska, ensuring that our communities have the most advanced and reliable telecommunications services.”
Westport: A Key Hub for Submarine Network Expansion
SNI has chosen Westport, Washington, as the location for the new landing station due to its favorable conditions for laying submarine cables. The planned infrastructure will connect multiple clients with high-capacity needs, solidifying Alaska as a key player in the expansion of global telecommunications networks.
AP&T, traded on the OTC Markets under the symbol APTL, continues to establish itself as a leader in broadband infrastructure and energy services in over 40 rural communities in Alaska.
