Ortel and CPFC Join Forces to Lead the Manufacturing of High-Power Lasers

Ortel, a leading optoelectronic technology company, has announced the successful transfer of wafer manufacturing for its innovative high-power continuous wave C-band laser module to the Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC), the largest III-V semiconductor fabrication facility in North America. This strategic move aims to ensure a consistent supply of wafers and enhance production capabilities for key sectors such as LIDAR, fiber optic sensors, coherent optical communications, and electronic testing.

Key Features of the C-band Laser

Ortel’s laser module positions itself as an advanced solution with the following specifications:

  • Narrow linewidth, with typical values of 50 kHz.
  • High output power, reaching up to 100 mW.
  • Low noise level, ideal for sensitive applications.
  • Compatibility with DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) systems and availability according to ITU wavelength standards.

The device is offered in various formats, including:

  • Model 1790: 14-pin butterfly package.
  • Model 1995: TO56 cooled package.
  • Custom mountings for specific applications.

First customer samples are expected to be available in February 2025, with full-scale production planned for the second quarter of the same year.

An Alliance that Strengthens Innovation

Grant Olecko, Vice President of Product Line Management at Ortel, highlighted the benefits of this collaboration:
“The CPFC has state-of-the-art infrastructure that provides critical advantages such as supply security, customized epitaxial growth, and significant technological improvements. These capabilities, combined with Ortel’s expertise in device design and vertical integration, create unmatched value for our customers.”

For his part, Velko Tzolov, General Director of the CPFC, emphasized the importance of this partnership:
“We are thrilled to formalize this long-term collaboration with Ortel, which will allow us to work together on innovative technologies to enhance device performance while maintaining a highly reliable manufacturing process.”

CPFC: The Epicenter of Photonic Innovation

The Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre, located at the National Research Council of Canada, is recognized as a leader in semiconductor wafer fabrication. Since 2004, it has contributed to the development of disruptive technologies such as:

  • Semiconductor lasers.
  • Optical amplifiers.
  • High-speed modulators.
  • Micro-LEDs.
  • RF circuits in GaN.

With comprehensive production tools that include customized epitaxy services, the CPFC enables the commercial manufacture of advanced photonic chips, positioning itself as a key partner for Ortel in its pursuit of global leadership.
