Space42 (ADX: SPACE42), a United Arab Emirates-based company specializing in AI-powered space technology, announced the successful launch of its telecommunications satellite Thuraya 4 (T4). This significant milestone strengthens Space42’s capabilities in geospatial data, AI-driven analytics, and non-terrestrial connectivity solutions, aligning with the UAE’s ambitious National Space Strategy 2030.
The satellite was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, USA, at 8:26 PM (Eastern Time). Following the initial deployment, Thuraya 4 activated its electric thrusters for a process of Electric Orbital Raising (EOR) that will last several months until it reaches its geostationary orbit at 44° East, approximately 36,000 kilometers above Earth.
Enhanced capabilities for global connectivity
Thuraya 4, one of the largest mobile communications satellites produced to date, significantly expands Space42’s coverage across Africa, Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Built on the Airbus Eurostar Neo platform, Thuraya 4 includes:
- 12-meter antenna operating in L-band: Ensures unprecedented flexibility in routing.
- Advanced onboard processing: Capable of managing up to 3,200 channels with dynamic power allocation across multiple spot beams.
- High capacity and fast speeds: Ideal for meeting growing demands in defense, government, and enterprise sectors.
A strategic step toward new markets
The launch of Thuraya 4 also lays the groundwork for the rollout of 15 new products planned by Space42, aimed at addressing emerging use cases in sectors such as the Internet of Things (IoT), direct communications to devices, and non-terrestrial network applications.
Mansoor Al Mansoori, Chairman of Space42:
“The launch of Thuraya 4 is a clear testament to our commitment to innovation and the consolidation of the UAE’s leadership in the SpaceTech sector. This milestone not only redefines the future of connectivity but also strengthens our nation’s strategic goals.”
Karim Michel Sabbagh, CEO of Space42:
“Thuraya 4 establishes a solid foundation for next-generation mobile satellite solutions. This achievement expands our offering for clients and partners, creating new opportunities for innovation and reinforcing our position in the global SatCom industry.”
Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Yahsat Space Services, Space42:
“This launch represents a monumental step in our mission to lead non-terrestrial networks globally, explore emerging segments, and diversify our solutions for customers around the world.”
Technological collaboration with Airbus
The satellite was manufactured by Airbus in collaboration with partners including the European Space Agency (ESA), CNES, and UKSA. Alain Fauré, Airbus’s Space Systems Director, emphasized:
“Thuraya 4 represents a new chapter in our partnership with Space42. With our Eurostar Neo platform, this satellite provides advanced capabilities that enhance the flexibility and efficiency of Space42’s fleet.”
A boost to the National Space Strategy 2030
Thuraya 4 underscores the UAE’s commitment to technological innovation and the development of cutting-edge space capabilities, positioning the country as a key player in the global space technology industry.
