Digital Realty (NYSE: DLR), a leading global provider of cloud and data center solutions, will reach the milestone of operating with 100% clean and renewable energy at its 11 data centers located in Illinois starting in 2025.
As part of this advancement, Digital Realty recently signed a community solar agreement in Illinois, which includes three local solar projects in Will and Livingston counties. With an estimated total installed capacity of 19.8 MWdc, this initiative reinforces Digital Realty’s commitment to renewable energy sources, propelling its sustainability agenda and providing direct benefits to local communities.
Aaron Binkley, Vice President of Sustainability at Digital Realty, remarked, “We are excited to invest in the clean energy future of Illinois. This community solar agreement reflects our dedication to supporting local economies and enhancing access to renewable energy. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement, and we look forward to continuing to move in this direction.”
Digital Realty is becoming one of the first major global data center operators to join the Illinois Shines program, an initiative managed by the Illinois Power Agency (IPA). This agreement positions Digital Realty as a key participant with a 26% share in the total installed solar capacity of the projects. In addition to benefiting its operations, these projects will provide savings and energy benefits to other local solar subscribers. The solar installations are expected to generate approximately 150 local jobs, strengthening the regional economy and promoting community well-being.
The Illinois Shines program aims to democratize access to solar energy in the state and contribute to Illinois’ sustainability goals, which include achieving 40% renewable energy by 2030, 50% by 2040, and 100% clean energy by 2050. This program is part of a broader effort to develop solar infrastructure in the state and reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
In addition to the community solar agreement, Digital Realty’s clean energy portfolio for its data centers in Illinois includes power purchase agreements with utility-scale wind projects, retail supply contracts, and emissions-free energy from nuclear sources.
The company was recently recognized by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) as one of the top corporate solar adopters, further reinforcing its commitment to high-quality renewable energy sources. With over 150 data centers in its global portfolio operating on 100% renewable electricity and more than 1.5 GW of contracted capacity in solar and wind projects, Digital Realty continues to demonstrate its leadership in sustainability and dedication to a greener future.
Through these efforts, Digital Realty not only optimizes the operation of its data centers but also significantly contributes to the energy transition and the reduction of carbon footprints globally. Its focus on sustainability drives a cleaner economy and supports more resilient and connected communities.
