Telefónica announces the addition of Andrea Folgueiras and Juan Azcue to its Executive Committee

Telefónica has announced today significant changes to its Executive Committee, with the addition of Andrea Folgueiras and Juan Azcue starting in 2025. These appointments reinforce the company’s commitment to technological innovation and the strategic development of its global business, in line with its purpose of generating sustainable value.

The Board of Directors of Telefónica, led by its Executive Chairman José María Álvarez-Pallete, has approved these decisions as part of a planned succession plan aimed at strengthening key areas of the organization.

Andrea Folgueiras, new Chief Technology Officer

Andrea Folgueiras, currently the Chief Technology and Information Officer (CTIO) for Latin America, will take over as Global Chief Technology and Information Officer (GCTIO) starting March 31, 2025, succeeding Enrique Blanco. With more than 30 years of experience in the telecommunications sector and international experience across Argentina, Germany, Brazil, and other key markets, Folgueiras becomes a central figure for Telefónica’s technological strategy.

An Electronic Engineer graduated from the University of Buenos Aires, Folgueiras also holds an MBA from ESEADE. Since joining the Telefónica Group in 1991, she has held leadership positions in various regions, including her role as CTO at Telefónica Deutschland and Telefónica Brasil. She is also a member of the boards of Internet para Todos in Peru and Onnet Fibra in Colombia and Chile.

The company has expressed its gratitude to Enrique Blanco for his 40 years of contribution, during which he positioned Telefónica as a benchmark in next-generation networks.

Juan Azcue, head of Strategy and Corporate Development

Meanwhile, Juan Azcue will assume the role of Director of Strategy and Corporate Development, replacing Mark Evans, who will leave the company in January 2025 after 13 years of distinguished service. Azcue holds a degree in Economic and Business Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid and started his career at KPMG before joining Telefónica in 2004. Throughout his career with the Group, he has led strategic transactions such as the acquisition of O2, the privatization of Cesky Telecom, and the merger of O2 with Virgin Media in the UK.

In his role, Azcue will work to ensure continuity in the company’s strategic plan, known as GPS (Growth, Profitability, and Sustainability).
