AMD announced the launch of its adaptive System-on-Chip platform, the AMD Versal™ Premium Series Gen 2, a solution designed to deliver maximum performance across a wide range of data-intensive workloads. Backed by cutting-edge technologies like Compute Express Link (CXL®) 3.1 and PCIe® Gen6, as well as support for LPDDR5X memory, the new generation of FPGA devices promises to transform data processing in data centers, communications, defense, and other sectors.
This launch makes AMD the first company to offer FPGA devices with support for CXL 3.1 and PCIe Gen6, a breakthrough that facilitates faster and more efficient data transfer. These interface and memory technologies provide instant access to memory resources, a key requirement amid the growth of real-time processing and intensive storage applications.
Innovation for System Acceleration
The Versal Premium Gen 2 series is designed to tackle the challenges of intensive computing. By integrating CXL 3.1 and PCIe Gen6, these devices provide high-speed connectivity between CPUs and accelerators, effectively doubling the bandwidthBandwidth is the maximum data transfer capacity… compared to comparable devices from previous generations. According to AMD, the PCIe Gen6 line improves speed by 2 to 4 times compared to other FPGA devices supporting PCIe Gen4 or Gen5.
“System architects are constantly looking to pack more data into less space and transfer it efficiently between different parts of a system,” said Salil Raje, senior vice president of AMD and general manager of the Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group. “Our latest addition to the Versal Gen 2 series enables our customers to maximize the overall performance of their systems and optimally utilize memory resources, providing a competitive edge in high-performance applications.”
Increased Bandwidth and Memory Efficiency
The Versal Premium Gen 2 series also offers accelerated memory bandwidth, thanks to its LPDDR5X connectivity, which reaches speeds of up to 8,533 Mb/s, making it the fastest option available on the market. This allows for quicker data transfer and greater real-time responsiveness, achieving speeds up to 2.7 times faster compared to previous devices with LPDDR4/5 memory.
CXL memory expansion modules allow for greater scalability, increasing overall bandwidth and improving memory efficiency for various applications. This design optimizes the performance of complex systems and enables memory resource sharing among multiple accelerators.
Enhancing Security in Data Processing
Security is another priority in the Versal Premium Gen 2 series. These devices introduce, for the first time in the industry, the integrated PCIe® Integrity and Data Encryption (IDE) feature, which protects data both in transit and at rest. Additionally, the high-speed cryptography engines operating at 400 Gb/s provide data protection at speeds that double those of comparable devices.
Availability and Developer Resources
AMD has scheduled the launch of development tools for the Versal Premium Gen 2 series for the second quarter of 2025, with the first silicon samples expected to be available in early 2026. Production deliveries will begin in the second half of 2026.
