GlobalFoundries, in collaboration with Witmem Technology and Microchip Technology, has announced the launch of samples for its innovative WTM-8 video processor, designed to deliver high performance and low power consumption in cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) applications. This chip is aimed at devices such as augmented reality headsets and advanced 8K televisions, marking a significant advancement in AI-driven video processing technology.
Advanced Technology for 8K Video and AI Applications
The WTM-8 processor, which supports resolutions up to 8K at 120 frames per second (FPS), combines two chiplets: one for digital logic built on GlobalFoundries’ 12LP+ platform and another chiplet for analog in-memory computing (aCIM) using 28ESF3 technology, featuring SuperFlash® from Silicon Storage Technology (SST). This configuration enables the WTM-8 to store and process up to 64 million AI inference parameters, optimizing power usage by reducing the need for data transfers.
Highlighted features of the WTM-8 include:
- Frame interpolation and super-resolution in 4K/8K at 60 and 120 FPS, providing visual enhancements such as noise reduction, high dynamic range (HDR), and superior image quality on high-resolution displays.
- Energy-efficient processing, achieving 8K/120 FPS performance with power consumption of less than 2 watts.
- Cost efficiency, outperforming GPU and DRAM-based solutions with a significantly lower cost, up to 10 times cheaper.
