Marc Palau: “At cdmon, cloud computing is our commitment to a safe and sustainable future”

With over 20 years of experience in the domain and web hosting sector, cdmon has established itself as a benchmark in the Spanish market, standing out for its solid track record in digital infrastructure services. Founded in 2002 and led by Jaume R. Palau and Marc Palau, the company has positioned itself as a trusted provider, certified in quality and security, and accredited by the National Security Scheme (ENS). This interview offers an in-depth look at how cdmon has adopted and promoted the use of cloud computing and multi-cloud technology, aligning with European standards in innovation and sustainability.

In this interview, Marc Palau, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of cdmon, addresses key topics about the future of cloud computing, the adoption of cloud solutions in Spain, and the barriers many companies, especially SMEs, still face. Additionally, Palau explains the fundamental role of security and sustainability in the development of cdmon’s services, a company that prides itself on offering reliable and sustainable cloud infrastructure management, all within a platform that guarantees data sovereignty in European territory.

1. Cloud Computing Adoption

What percentage of your clients has migrated to the cloud, and how has this percentage evolved in recent years?

At cdmon, we have fully adopted the cloud as an integral part of our infrastructure and services. Currently, 100% of our clients operate directly in the cloud, reflecting a total commitment to solutions based on this technology. This transition has been gradual yet consistent over the past few years, aligning with market trends and the increasing demands for flexibility, scalability, and security that our clients require.

What are the main benefits your clients have observed from adopting cloud solutions?

One of the primary benefits our clients have experienced with cloud solutions is the ability to scale their products and services efficiently and dynamically based on their consumption needs. This flexibility allows businesses to adjust their resources without the typical limitations of physical infrastructure, enabling agile and cost-effective growth.

Do you believe that cloud adoption in Spain is on par with that in other European countries? Why?

Yes, we believe that cloud adoption in Spain is on par with that in other European countries. This is largely due to the advanced development of Internet infrastructure in our country, which stands alongside any leading European nation in this sector. The robust connectivity network and increasing investment in digital technologies have allowed Spain not only to keep pace with its European neighbors but, in some cases, to lead in implementing innovative cloud-based solutions.

2. Multi-cloud Environment

In your opinion, why are more companies choosing a multi-cloud environment instead of relying on a single provider?

If a company decides to diversify its cloud provider, this decision is usually linked to a risk analysis, although currently, we are not aware of many companies adopting this approach.

What are the main benefits of a multi-cloud strategy? And the main challenges?

The primary benefit is the diversification of risk in case of incidents. The cost of implementing a dual system is one of the main challenges, leading the company to conduct a cost analysis to determine whether migrating to a multi-cloud strategy is financially viable.

How do you help companies manage the complexity that arises when implementing a multi-cloud environment?

We do not specifically offer this type of support; we can manage 100% of their online presence.

3. Barriers to Cloud Adoption in SMEs

What are the main barriers preventing SMEs from widely adopting cloud solutions?

The main barriers for companies typically include the lack of knowledge and/or experience. For this reason, at cdmon, we offer 100% managed services so that clients do not have to possess that knowledge; we take care of the technical complexity, allowing clients to focus on developing their value proposition.

What are the most common concerns SMEs have regarding security and cost when migrating to the cloud?

What we see is that clients tend to be concerned about the aspects that impact their business, which they do not have enough knowledge to resolve. Thus, having a strategic partner with expertise and management capability can greatly simplify the adoption of a cloud strategy while reducing risks related to security and long-term costs.

What solutions does your company offer to help SMEs overcome these obstacles?

Our value proposition is trust and expertise, ensuring data sovereignty.

We are transparent with costs so that the client does not face surprises at renewal.

4. Migration and Complexity

What aspects of cloud migration are typically the most complex for companies? How do you help reduce this complexity?

The most complex part is service compatibility; hence we take care of migrating your website completely free of charge.

What measures do you consider necessary for SMEs to feel more confident about migrating to the cloud?

A partner that provides guarantees of success and proven experience.

Have you noticed a difference in cloud adoption among industrial sectors (e.g., financial services vs. retail)?

The financial and healthcare sectors tend to seek standardized market solutions such as the national security scheme, ISO 27001, or compliance with the new European NIS2 regulation.

5. Cloud Security

In terms of security, what challenges do companies face when migrating to the cloud?

The risks of having an online presence as well as key business processes being online have notably increased in recent years. Currently, there are many malicious actors who have developed numerous potential ways to attack online businesses, including targeted attacks, phishing, identity theft, ransomware, and many more emerging with the advent of AI.

In our case, we have developed tailored solutions for detecting and disinfecting malware on websites.

What are the most effective security measures you recommend implementing when working in the cloud?

There is no silver bullet; security is a topic that needs to be addressed in layers and is a concept that involves 100% of the company’s staff as well as all processes involved in the operational and business development of companies.

6. The Role of Partners

What role do partners play in the success of a cloud migration?

In our case, we are clear that addressing the migration of the client’s website with security and quality is fundamental to ensuring the success of the migration.

How do you ensure that migration projects are well supported from planning through execution and maintenance?

We have a very flexible process to adapt to each client’s situation, with a complete team working professionally and regularly accompanying each migration.

What additional services do you offer to help companies manage their cloud infrastructure after migration?

We handle 100% of the service management. The client only needs to focus on developing their business and communicating with us about their needs.

7. Sustainability and the Future of Cloud

Do you think sustainability is becoming a key factor when choosing cloud solutions?

Cloud companies like cdmon have a fundamental role in sustainability as electric and cooling consumption needs to improve in the coming years to minimize the footprint.

How are you helping companies reduce their carbon footprint and energy consumption through cloud solutions?

It is very important for us that our clients feel secure working with a sustainably responsible company, which is why cdmon is the first Spanish hosting company accredited by the Green Web Foundation.

How do you see the future of cloud computing, and what new trends do you foresee marking the evolution of multi-cloud environments in the coming years?

Regarding multi-cloud environments, we do not have a clear opinion. Concerning new trends, a high impact from sustainability and hybrid cloud-on-premise configurations is expected.
