Within the framework of the German Government’s Digital Summit, Schwarz Digits, the technology division of the Schwarz Group, and Deutsche Bahn announced the creation of DataHub Europe, an innovative data platform that promises to drive the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe. The initiative aims to provide high-quality data to businesses and organizations for training AI models in a secure environment, complying with stringent European privacy regulations and ensuring the sovereignty of data owners’ rights.
A Space for “Made in Europe” AI
With DataHub Europe, data from industrial sectors and media is processed, curated, and made available to partners for training AI models. Companies such as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Wirtschaftswoche, and Handelsblatt have contributed their data to the platform, enabling unprecedented collaboration in AI. The platform becomes a valuable tool for developing tailored AI solutions for each company, which can be quickly implemented in business applications without compromising data security and privacy.
The German Minister of Digital and Transport, Dr. Volker Wissing, emphasized the significance of this platform: “DataHub Europe fills a crucial gap in the EU by providing high-quality data for training AI. German companies have once again demonstrated that we can combine innovation with implementation capacity, creating an ecosystem that elevates AI development to the next level in Europe.”
Partnerships with Technology and Science Leaders
The development of DataHub Europe has the collaboration of major technological and academic partners, such as Aleph Alpha, STACKIT, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), and the Technical University of Darmstadt. These allies will allow AI models to be trained and developed within a secure European infrastructure, ensuring compliance with European regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the EU AI Act.
Dr. Daniela Gerd tom Markotten, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Deutsche Bahn, highlighted the platform’s commitment to European digital sovereignty: “As a state-owned enterprise and critical infrastructure, we take social responsibility to help strengthen digital sovereignty in Germany and Europe. DataHub Europe enables secure and efficient integration of AI applications into our daily work.”
A Practical Example: AuditGPT
During the Digital Summit, the founders of DataHub Europe presented AuditGPT, one of the first practical applications of the platform. This AI model, currently in a pilot phase at Deutsche Bahn and Schwarz Group, allows for partial automation of audit work, facilitating the review and verification of processes and regulations across different departments. AuditGPT standardizes the creation of audit reports, freeing employees to focus on other tasks, thereby increasing efficiency in a secure environment compliant with privacy regulations.
Christian Müller, Co-CEO of Schwarz Digits, emphasized the platform’s value for European companies: “DataHub Europe utilizes the highest level of data sovereignty to build a European platform that connects rights holders, technology companies, and clients, promoting AI solutions aligned with the European strategy in this field.”
Strengthening Europe’s Competitiveness in AI
DataHub Europe aims not only to be a data platform but also a catalyst for European competitiveness in AI. With the support of businesses, public institutions, and academia, the consortium seeks to foster the development of powerful and reliable AI applications across Europe. As Robert Habeck, Vice President and Minister of Economy of Germany, highlighted: “Data is the new gold. It is crucial that the value creation of AI takes place in Europe, enabling secure and efficient data use that drives the assessment and safety of models.”
DataHub Europe is poised to be a central player in European AI, promoting an ecosystem that ensures security and control over data on a platform that combines innovation, stability, and sovereignty.
