Ericsson and MasOrange Partner to Create Open and High-Performance Mobile Network in Spain

Starting in October 2024, Ericsson and MasOrange, resulting from the merger of Orange Spain and MASMOVIL, will launch an ambitious project to consolidate and expand the mobile network in Spain. This agreement, which integrates the current networks of both companies, includes the deployment of advanced 5G solutions and an open, programmable architecture, allowing MasOrange to develop one of the most modern mobile networks in Europe.

Open and Sustainable Network Driven by Ericsson

The project includes the implementation of 5G Standalone (5G SA) technology in rural areas, highlighting the commitment of both companies to connectivity in less populated regions. Once completed, this deployment will ensure greater coverage and capacity, enabling the provision of differentiated 5G services across the country.

Meinrad Spenger, CEO of MasOrange, described the alliance as “a turning point for the European telecommunications industry and the Spanish market.” Spenger emphasized MasOrange’s role in adopting Open RAN in Europe, a system that promotes interoperability and network flexibility.

In turn, Jenny Lindqvist, Senior Vice President of Ericsson for Europe and Latin America, stated that “high-performance networks will be key to digitizing businesses and society.” Ericsson’s focus is on creating programmable and accessible networks through APIs, thereby driving sustainable innovation and growth.

Innovation in 5G Technology: Massive MIMO and Network Densification

The alliance includes the incorporation of products from the Ericsson Radio System, enhancing network capacity while reducing energy costs. This includes integrated antennas with Massive MIMO technology, compatible with Open RAN, which will enable greater data transmission capacity in 5G networks through the use of multiple spatial channels.

Additionally, the deployment of Massive MIMO Time Division Duplex (TDD) technology will optimize the user experience, as it allows simultaneous data transmission in multiple directions. This technology will be crucial in meeting the demand for services in urban areas and at large events, where the network requires higher capacity and density.

The project also includes a network densification plan to expand coverage and enhance performance. This approach consists of adding more nodes and network sites in high-demand areas, benefiting both urban and rural MasOrange customers.

A Step Forward Towards the Digitalization of Spain

With this alliance, Ericsson and MasOrange are not only strengthening the telecommunications infrastructure in Spain, but also advancing the creation of an open network ecosystem that responds to the current market’s needs for flexibility and customization. Furthermore, the collaboration positions MasOrange as a leader in the adoption of sustainable and advanced technologies in the telecommunications sector in Europe.

This joint effort represents a significant advancement towards the digitalization and modernization of the mobile network in Spain, aiming to ensure high-quality connectivity for millions of users.
