Microsoft invests 4.3 billion euros to boost AI infrastructure in Italy

Microsoft has announced a historic investment of 4.3 billion euros in Italy for the next two years, with the aim of expanding its cloud data center infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI) and providing digital skills training to over one million Italians by the end of 2025.

An Impetus for the Italian Digital Economy
This initiative, Microsoft’s largest investment in Italy to date, aims to help the country maximize the opportunities offered by AI and contribute to the Italian government’s focus on long-term economic growth and demographic challenges. The expansion of Microsoft’s data centers in northern Italy, along with its commitment to providing comprehensive AI skills training, responds to the growing demand for AI and cloud computing services across the country.

Impact on Strategic Sectors
Integrating AI into strategic sectors such as manufacturing, health, finance, and public administration will enable Italy to innovate in production processes, improve patient outcomes, enhance financial services, and increase the efficiency of public services. Furthermore, incorporating AI into local small and medium-sized enterprises can drive new levels of innovation and entrepreneurship.

AI Training for One Million Italians
As part of this investment, Microsoft and its partners will introduce new training programs to empower over one million people in Italy by 2025. These programs will focus on AI literacy, technical AI skills, AI-based business transformation, and promoting the safe and responsible development of AI.

Inclusive Training Initiatives
Among the highlighted initiatives is the non-profit organization ELIS’ “Include to Grow” program, which aims to reduce educational poverty and help marginalized individuals enter the workforce, with a special focus on women who have struggled to find employment after maternity leave. Another initiative, Ital.IA LAB, led by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, focuses on creating a national infrastructure of Generative AI learning centers and establishing a network of trainers to educate youth, job seekers, and workers, especially women and individuals in disadvantaged areas of southern Italy.

Infrastructure Expansion and AI Adoption
Microsoft’s investment also includes the expansion of its infrastructure in Italy to accelerate AI adoption and help organizations innovate securely and improve productivity. Microsoft Italia’s AI L.A.B. program has brought together over 320 companies in the past year, creating more than 450 Generative AI projects, with 50% already operational.

Economic Impact and Productivity
According to a recent study by THEA Group and Microsoft Italia, Italian companies are experiencing tangible productivity increases thanks to Generative AI. 47% of companies using AI solutions report productivity gains of over 5%, while 74% have experienced productivity gains of over 1%.

Commitment to Responsible and Sustainable AI
Microsoft is committed to advancing AI in a responsible and sustainable manner, based on six core principles: fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusivity, transparency, and accountability. The company has also joined local sustainability initiatives, such as the Forestami project for reforestation in the Milan metropolitan area.

Conclusion
Microsoft’s investment in Italy represents a significant step towards the country’s digital transformation and its positioning as a leader in AI-driven economy. With a focus on infrastructure, training, and responsible technology adoption, this initiative promises to drive innovation, productivity, and economic growth in the coming years.
