Adoption of AI surges in Europe, according to Digital Realty study

A recent report reveals that data strategies are key to business success in the era of artificial intelligence.

Rise of AI in large organizations

Data center giant Digital Realty has released the results of its “State of Data and AI in Europe” study, an investigation shedding light on the growing maturity in the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the European continent. Based on responses from over 2,000 IT leaders, the report reveals that 85% of large organizations in Europe are implementing AI strategies, with 42% actively monetizing this technology.

Challenges in monetization and transformation

Despite the increase in adoption, the study points out a significant gap between implementation and actual impact on businesses. Only 27% of European companies consider their current use of AI to be transformative, highlighting the need for further investment in digital infrastructure to unlock the full potential of this technology.

The importance of data strategies

The report highlights that nearly all companies in Europe have integrated AI to some degree, with a growing recognition of the importance of having robust data strategies. Two-thirds (65%) of respondents identify these strategies as essential for effectively managing and leveraging data assets in executing AI initiatives.

Obstacles in digital infrastructure

Despite progress, many European companies lack the necessary digital infrastructure for success in both data and AI. Key challenges include:

  • Data storage: 57% of European companies report insufficient storage capacity.
  • Infrastructure positioning: 57% acknowledge that their IT infrastructure needs to be strategically located.
  • Data gravity: Data accumulation in certain areas of the infrastructure hinders mobility.

Expert insights

Colin McLean, Chief Revenue Officer at Digital Realty, commented on the findings: “We are witnessing a decisive shift towards using AI to generate tangible organizational value. As seen in this survey, achieving this requires a digital infrastructure capable of managing large volumes of data, supporting AI workloads, and providing real-time intelligence.”

Additional challenges and budget adjustments

The study also reveals other obstacles to effective AI adoption:

  • Computational power: 53% of European companies lack the necessary power to run AI processes where required.
  • Organizational barriers: Insufficient knowledge or support from leadership for data-driven AI strategies.

Business and IT leaders are adjusting their budgets to manage the growing volume of data and unlock the competitive advantages of AI. However, only 14% are currently using AI to create a competitive advantage, indicating an urgent need to rethink data strategies to yield substantial returns on AI investments.
