Data centers in the UK receive massive boost and protection against cyberattacks

The British government has announced a significant measure to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure, designating data centers as Critical National Infrastructure (CNI). This decision, announced by Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, places data centers on the same level of importance as energy and water systems.

Enhanced Protection for the Digital Economy
The new CNI designation will provide data centers with:
– Greater government support to recover from and anticipate critical incidents
– Priority access to security agencies, including the National Cyber Security Centre
– Improved coordination with emergency services in case of incidents

These changes aim to minimize impacts on the economy and protect crucial data, from NHS medical records to sensitive financial information.

Massive Investment in the Sector
Coinciding with this announcement, the government has welcomed a £3.75 billion investment proposal to build the largest data center in Europe in Hertfordshire. This project, presented by DC01UK, promises to:
– Create over 700 local jobs directly
– Support 13,740 jobs in data and technology nationwide

Impact on Security and the Economy
The CNI designation aims to:
– Deter cybercriminals from targeting data centers with vital information
– Minimize disruption of essential services, including the NHS
– Increase business confidence to invest in data centers in the UK

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle stated, “Data centers are the engines of modern life, driving the digital economy and keeping our most personal information secure. Incorporating them into the Critical National Infrastructure regime will enable better coordination and cooperation with the government against cybercriminals and unforeseen events.”

Sector Reactions
The industry has positively received this measure:
– Bruce Owen, Managing Director of Equinix in the UK, expressed satisfaction with the recognition of the critical nature of data centers for the economy and society.
– Matthew Evans, Markets Director and COO of techUK, welcomed the decision, highlighting the fundamental role of data centers in the UK’s modern economy.

This designation marks a significant milestone in the UK’s digital strategy, reinforcing its position as a leader in data security and fostering sustained economic growth in the technology sector.
