Meta has announced a new partnership with Sage Geosystems to significantly expand the use of geothermal energy in the United States. During the U.S. Department of Energy workshop on geothermal energy, this pioneering collaboration was introduced, aiming to bring advanced geothermal energy to parts of the country where it was previously not feasible. This effort reflects Meta’s commitment to clean energy and its quest to find reliable, affordable, and carbon-free energy sources to power its operations.
Geothermal energy: a promising renewable solution
Geothermal energy is a renewable source with great potential in the United States. Sage Geosystems will use its innovative Geopressured Geothermal System (GGS) to generate carbon-free energy that will power Meta’s data centers. While traditional geothermal energy has been focused in regions like Nevada, Utah, and California, Sage’s technology represents a significant advancement in the clean energy sector, allowing for the harnessing of geothermal resources in virtually any location.
Sage’s GGS system is capable of exploiting heat from hot, dry rock formations, a more abundant resource than traditional hydrothermal formations. This scalable technology not only promises to provide a stable and sustainable energy source, but also reinforces grid stability, which could facilitate its expansion both nationally and globally.
A forward-thinking project
The primary goal of this collaboration between Meta and Sage Geosystems is to have the first operational phase by 2027. This initial stage is expected to deliver up to 150 MW of geothermal energy, a significant backup for the growth of Meta’s data centers, which rely on constant, carbon-free energy.
This project is part of Meta’s strategy towards a zero-carbon economy. To date, the company has contracted over 12,000 MW in renewable energy projects, positioning itself as one of the largest corporate buyers of clean energy globally.
Commitment to a healthier planet
Meta remains a leader in promoting sustainable energy solutions that contribute to creating a healthier planet for all. This new geothermal project not only reinforces its commitment to clean energy, but also showcases the potential of advanced geothermal energy to transform the energy landscape of the United States and the world.
As work progresses on this innovative initiative, Meta will continue to explore and adopt new technologies that support its environmental goals, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
