Iberdrola, a leader in the energy sector, takes a step forward in its diversification strategy with the creation of a new joint venture focused on the growing data center market. The Spanish company aims to capitalize on the demand for data processing and Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructures in Spain and other countries.
New company: CPD4Green
The energy company has launched CPD4Green, a company designed to convert electrical lands into operational data centers 24/7. This initiative is part of Iberdrola’s vision to promote the electrification of the economy, aligning with its strategic plan focused on networks, renewable energies, and storage.
Turnkey project for data centers
Iberdrola aims to offer a comprehensive solution that includes:
– Suitable lands
– Supply of renewable electricity
– Guarantee of supply security
– Connection to the electricity grid
– 24/7 energy contracts
With this approach, the company aims to position itself as a leader in a market niche with great growth potential.
Potential portfolio and expansion
The company currently has:
– A potential portfolio of 5 gigawatts (GW)
– 1 GW in advanced development stage
– Over 200 megawatts (MW) with secured connection in Spain
While the initial focus is on the Spanish market, Iberdrola does not rule out expanding this initiative to other countries where it has a presence, such as the United States or the United Kingdom.
Strategic partnerships and growth prospects
Iberdrola has already established agreements with tech giants like Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, adding over eight terawatt hours (TWh) annually in contracts. According to the company’s projections, data centers could eventually account for nearly 10% of electricity demand in the future, tripling current levels.
Leadership and future vision
Ignacio Sánchez Galán, president of Iberdrola, confirmed during the first semester results presentation that the creation of CPD4Green aligns with the company’s strategy to seize opportunities in a sector with high electricity demand.
With this initiative, Iberdrola once again demonstrates its ability to anticipate market trends, positioning itself as a key player in the energy transition and digital transformation.
