Mitsubishi Electric will double its production to meet the demand for AI in Data Centers.

Mitsubishi Electric is facing major challenges to meet the growing global demand for optical components needed for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructures in data centers. The Japanese company, a key player in the market for fiber optic communication devices, is experiencing a significant increase in requests due to the AI boom.

Increasing Production Capacity

According to Bloomberg, Mitsubishi Electric, which controls nearly half of the global market for optical transmission devices for data centers, is taking decisive steps to address the situation. The company, based in Tokyo, has announced that it will increase its production capacity of optical devices by 50% compared to the previous year. Despite this increase, demand continues to outstrip supply.

Masayoshi Takemi, CEO of Mitsubishi Electric’s semiconductor business, commented that the company may need to double its current production capacity to meet demand. “We might need to double what we will have by September,” Takemi stated.

Impact of AI Demand

The growing demand for AI infrastructure is driving sales of Mitsubishi Electric’s optical devices. However, despite this growth in sales, optical devices accounted for less than four percent of the company’s total revenue in the last fiscal year, highlighting that while the sector is crucial, it is still a relatively small part of Mitsubishi Electric’s global business.

Challenges in the AI Sector

The global artificial intelligence market is experiencing rapid growth but also faces significant challenges. Despite large investments in generative AI, the valuation of key companies in this field, such as Nvidia, has recently suffered. Nvidia saw a 15% drop in its stock value, and other chip manufacturers like Renesas Electronics and Tokyo Electron have also faced difficulties.

A research bulletin from Goldman Sachs warned that despite significant investments in AI infrastructure, it is unclear whether these investments will generate substantial financial returns. The firm estimates that around one billion dollars will be invested in AI infrastructure in the next year, but sustainable commercial models have not yet been demonstrated.

Looking to the Future

As Mitsubishi Electric works to expand its production capacity and meet the growing demand, the AI industry and technological infrastructure continue to evolve. Companies’ ability to quickly adapt to market needs will be crucial for success in this dynamic sector. Mitsubishi Electric is committed to facing these challenges as the landscape of artificial intelligence continues to develop and confront uncertainties.
