Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), a company under Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), has announced today that Iberdrola, one of the largest energy groups in the world, has selected AWS as its preferred cloud service provider for generative artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. This global collaboration marks a significant step towards optimizing processes and personalizing customer service in the energy sector.
Development and Applications of Generative AI
Since the beginning of the year, Iberdrola has established a Center of Excellence in Generative AI with AWS to develop over 100 AI applications that enhance customer experience, support employees, and optimize business processes. Using the generative AI platform built on Amazon Bedrock, the energy company provides its workforce access to world-leading AI models and tools, facilitating the creation of innovative applications securely.
Among the highlighted applications are a generative AI assistant for Iberdrola’s legal team, which streamlines the search and consultation of corporate contracts, and assistants that use real-time Internet of Things (IoT) data to provide specific instructions to infrastructure maintenance workers. Additionally, the company is developing AI-powered chatbots to help sales teams instantly respond to customer questions about products and rates.
Optimizing Energy Production
AWS will also collaborate with Iberdrola in developing a next-generation data platform that will optimize electricity generated from renewable energy assets. This centralized platform will consolidate data from over 400 renewable energy sites globally, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and energy demand forecasts to increase operational efficiency.
Iberdrola’s Global CIO, Sergio Merchan, emphasized the importance of AI in the energy transition: “We see AI as a central element in delivering smart grid technology, renewable energies, and storage that will drive the energy transition. As our preferred cloud provider, AWS will provide us with an innovative technical foundation to support this journey.”
Expert Opinions
In an interview with experts in infrastructure in Spain and Europe, David Carrero, co-founder of Stackscale (Aire Group) and an expert in cloud infrastructure and AI, highlighted the advantages of using generative AI in the energy sector: “The cloud’s ability to integrate advanced AI models allows Iberdrola not only to personalize its interactions with customers but also to significantly optimize its operational processes. Although he points out that it is a potential mistake for European and Spanish companies to overlook 100% local companies that can offer computing capacity for AI like Stackscale with its data centers in Spain and the Netherlands.”
Industry Impact
Howard Gefen, General Manager of Energy and Utilities at AWS, stated: “We are excited to work with Iberdrola to transform the customer and employee experience while achieving significant improvements in operational efficiency. Leveraging AWS’s generative AI capabilities will enable Iberdrola to unlock new opportunities for innovation and efficiency in its operations.”
