OpenNebula Systems leads the largest open-source cloud initiative in Europe.

OpenNebula Systems has solidified its position as a “pioneer” in Europe in the development of open source technological solutions for cloud infrastructure management, after taking the lead in the new ‘Important Common European Interest Project on Next Generation Cloud Infrastructures and Services’ (IPCEI-CIS). This news was announced through a press release issued by the company on Thursday.

A significant economic boost

This innovative initiative has been approved by the European Commission and has a joint state aid of up to 1.2 billion euros. It also includes the initial participation of twelve member states that will provide substantial public funding. It is expected that this funding will unlock an additional 1.4 billion euros in private investments, highlighting the magnitude and potential economic impact of the project.

Project objectives

The IPCEI-CIS aims to create a ‘cloud-edge’ continuum. This involves the consolidation of a European ecosystem of data processing and artificial intelligence (AI) providers that are interoperable and open access. This approach aims to strengthen European digital sovereignty, allowing for a more autonomous and robust technological infrastructure within the continent.

Pan-European collaboration

OpenNebula Systems is positioned as one of the 19 main strategic partners of the project. The initiative involves the participation of various industry leaders from the European Union (EU), including renowned names such as SAP, Telefónica, Amadeus, Orange, Siemens, Atos, Deutsche Telekom, Fincantieri, and the Mondragon Group. This large-scale collaboration reflects a concerted effort to propel European technology to new heights.

Leadership statements

Ignacio M. Llorente, CEO and co-founder of OpenNebula Systems, emphasized the importance of the IPCEI-CIS, describing it as a “revolutionary step towards achieving the digital sovereignty of the European Union.” Llorente expressed his enthusiasm for his company’s leadership in this strategic initiative, underscoring their commitment to providing market neutrality in the cloud and advancing towards a more independent and efficient technological infrastructure for Europe.

Expected impact

The success of the IPCEI-CIS could transform the European technological landscape, strengthening its position in the global cloud and artificial intelligence arena. The creation of a ‘cloud-edge’ continuum will not only facilitate interoperability and open access but also promote innovation and competitiveness within the EU.

This project represents a significant milestone in Europe’s digital strategy, and OpenNebula Systems, along with its partners, are at the forefront of this exciting development. With substantial funding and support from several member states, the IPCEI-CIS has the potential to redefine European technological infrastructure, fostering a more robust and sovereign ecosystem in cloud and artificial intelligence.
