VMware surprises with free Workstation and Fusion for home users.

VMware has announced a significant transformation in its desktop hypervisor product line, providing VMware Fusion and Workstation for free for home use. This decision aims to simplify access to advanced virtualization tools and encourage greater usage among individual users, after discontinuing the free version of the ESXi hypervisor.

Fusion and Workstation: Free for Personal Use
VMware’s Pro products, Fusion and Workstation, are now available for free for personal use. Users who wish to create virtual environments on their Windows, Linux, or Mac computers can do so at no cost, simply by registering and downloading the software from Broadcom’s new download portal, download Fusion Mac or Workstation Windows. This initiative is designed to facilitate learning and experimentation with virtualization technology, allowing users to explore and develop skills without incurring expenses.

Goodbye to Workstation Player and Fusion Player
With the introduction of this new policy, VMware has decided to discontinue the simplified versions of its products, VMware Workstation Player and VMware Fusion Player. Although these products will no longer be available for purchase, current users can upgrade to the Pro versions at no additional cost. This entails greater functionality and support, optimizing the user experience at no extra cost.

Subscription Model for Commercial Use
For organizations and users using these products in a commercial environment, VMware has introduced a simplified subscription model. Commercial licenses can now be purchased for around 120 euros per year through authorized Broadcom distributors. This subscription includes continuous product updates and technical support, ensuring that commercial users get the maximum benefit and keep their systems up to date and secure.

Continuity and Support
VMware ensures that all current customers with commercial licenses will continue to receive support according to their existing end-of-life (EOL) and end-of-general-support (EOGS) dates. Active customer accounts and associated licenses have been migrated to Broadcom’s customer portal, where they can be easily managed.

With this strategy, VMware not only simplifies its product offering but also democratizes access to advanced virtualization tools, fostering both individual learning and business innovation.
