The intensive use of natural resources such as water and electricity in data centers has led the industry to seek sustainable solutions to minimize its environmental impact. Sustainability is not only an internal concern but also a growing demand from client companies seeking quality service and environmental commitment.
In the public sector, for example, a significant change is observed. In addition to the usual certifications in security, technology, and availability, tenders now include requirements for sustainability and renewable energy consumption. This trend underscores the importance of sustainability in the technology sector.
Innovations in sustainability in data centers
A clear example of innovation in sustainability can be found in the new data center located in Paterna. This center has implemented a revolutionary cooling system that uses CO2 instead of large amounts of water or fluorinated gases. This system only needs water once to fill the circuit and then operates solely with CO2, significantly reducing environmental impact.
The use of CO2 instead of fluorinated gases is a strategic choice. While a standard 500 kW machine can contain up to 150 kilograms of gases that, in case of leakage, directly pollute the atmosphere, CO2 is a safer and more efficient option. Additionally, CO2 is not only economical and stable but also has low viscosity and high vapor density, improving energy efficiency and complying with European F-Gas regulations that progressively prohibit the use of fluorinated gases.
Geothermal energy as a sustainable complement
To complement this system, a geothermal park has been built on the Paterna facilities, one of the largest in the Valencian Community. This park, composed of 71 wells, helps balance the temperature of the gas in the cooling systems, replacing traditional water chillers that consume many resources. This innovation not only reduces water consumption but also helps mitigate water stress in the Spanish Levante, where these data centers are located.
A continuous commitment
Sustainability in data centers is an ongoing effort involving all sector stakeholders. The implementation of efficient cooling systems and the use of sustainable resources not only comply with environmental regulations but also respond to a growing customer demand for technological services that respect the environment. The industry is moving towards a more sustainable future, where technology and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
