Internet Report from May 6th to May 12th, 2024
ThousandEyes reported 159 network interruption events globally, spanning ISPs, cloud service provider networks, collaboration application networks, and edge networks (including DNS, content delivery networks, and security as a service) during the week of May 6th to May 12th. This represents a 5% decrease compared to the 151 events from the previous week. Specifically in the U.S., there were 66 interruptions recorded, representing a 32% increase from the 50 interruptions the previous week. Here is the breakdown by category:
ISP interruptions: Globally, the number of ISP interruptions decreased from 113 to 105, a 7% reduction compared to the previous week. In the U.S., the number of ISP interruptions slightly increased (3%) from 39 to 40 interruptions.
Cloud provider network interruptions: Globally, interruptions in cloud provider networks increased from 15 to 18. In the U.S., interruptions in cloud provider networks increased from 2 to 9.
Collaboration application network interruptions: Globally, interruptions in collaboration application networks decreased from 9 to 7. In the U.S., interruptions in collaboration application networks decreased from 3 to 2.
Two notable interruptions
On May 8th, Time Warner Cable, a U.S.-based ISP, experienced an interruption affecting several clients and partners nationwide. The interruption was first observed around 7:45 PM EDT and appeared to focus on Time Warner Cable nodes located in New York, NY. Five minutes later, the number of nodes in New York exhibiting interruption conditions increased. The interruption lasted a total of 23 minutes and was resolved around 8:10 PM EDT.
On May 7th, Comcast Communications experienced an interruption affecting several partners and clients in the U.S. and Canada. The interruption, lasting 8 minutes, was first observed around 1:20 AM EDT and appeared to focus on Comcast nodes in Chicago, IL and Ashburn, VA. Five minutes later, the nodes in Ashburn, VA seemed to resolve the issue, leaving nodes in Chicago, IL with interruption conditions. The decrease in nodes with interruption conditions coincided with a decrease in affected clients and partners. The interruption was resolved around 1:30 AM EDT.

ThousandEyes reported 151 network interruption events globally during the week of April 29th to May 5th. This represents a 3% decrease compared to the 156 events from the previous week. Specifically in the U.S., there were 50 interruptions recorded, a 7% decrease from the 54 interruptions the previous week. Here is the breakdown by category:
ISP interruptions: Globally, the number of ISP interruptions increased from 104 to 113, a 9% increase compared to the previous week. In the U.S., the number of ISP interruptions increased by 5%, from 37 to 39.
Cloud provider network interruptions: Globally, interruptions in cloud provider networks decreased from 22 to 15. In the U.S., interruptions in cloud provider networks decreased from 6 to 2.
Collaboration application network interruptions: Globally, interruptions in collaboration application networks increased from 8 to 9. In the U.S., interruptions in collaboration application networks decreased from 4 to 3.
Two notable interruptions
On April 29th, NTT America, a global Tier 1 ISP and subsidiary of NTT Global, experienced an interruption affecting some of its clients and partners in multiple regions, including the U.S., Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, the Netherlands, Hungary, Turkey, Brazil, India, Argentina, Australia, the UK, Thailand, Malaysia, Mexico, and Canada. The interruption, lasting 24 minutes, was first observed around 2:40 PM EDT and initially seemed to focus on NTT nodes located in San Jose, CA. Five minutes later, the nodes in San Jose, CA appeared to resolve the issue, being replaced by nodes in Tokyo, Japan. Ten minutes later, nodes in Tokyo were joined by nodes in Osaka, Japan, Singapore, Dallas, TX, and Los Angeles, CA. The interruption was resolved around 3:05 PM EDT.
On April 29th, Cogent Communications, a multinational transit provider based in the U.S., experienced an interruption affecting multiple providers and customers in various regions, including the U.S., Brazil, UK, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Japan, Germany, Spain, and France. The interruption, lasting a total of one hour and 12 minutes, was split into two episodes over a 35-minute period. The first episode was observed around 2:45 AM EDT and seemed to focus on Cogent nodes in Ashburn, VA, and Washington, D.C. Five minutes later, nodes in Ashburn, VA appeared to resolve the issue, being replaced by nodes in Baltimore, MD, New York, NY, and Phoenix, AZ, along with nodes in Washington, D.C. Twenty minutes later, nodes in New York, NY, and Washington, D.C. were joined by nodes in Houston, TX. The interruption was resolved around 3:20 AM EDT.
