Oracle has announced a series of significant updates to its Java SE platform, highlighting the extension of support for Java 11 and new developments in JavaFX and Solaris.
Extension of Support for Java 11
Oracle has decided to extend support for Java 11 until at least January 2032, eliminating extended support fees. This decision, announced in September 2023 alongside the release of Oracle Java 21, ensures Oracle Java 11 customers at least an additional eight years of support and updates. Oracle continuously monitors customer feedback and adoption of their long-term support (LTS) versions to consider future extensions.
Commitment to JavaFX
Oracle continues its commitment to the Java client roadmap, reaffirmed in 2020. JavaFX, which is developed and released as standalone modules through the OpenJFX project in OpenJDK, will continue to be available for free and as open source. Current versions include JavaFX 22 with Oracle JDK 22 and upcoming JavaFX 23 for Oracle JDK 23 in September 2024. Commercial support for JavaFX in JDK 8 will end in March 2025. Oracle recommends users to migrate to Swing and AWT, as JDK 8 updates after March 2025 will not include JavaFX.
Java Support on Solaris
Oracle has extended Java support on Solaris until at least December 2030 for Java SE 8 and January 2032 for Java SE 11. This represents a six-year extension to the support announced in 2019. Additionally, Oracle plans to support WebLogic 14.1.2 on Oracle Solaris/SPARC servers, with more information available at the time of release.
Transition from Advanced Management Console (AMC) to Java Management Service (JMS)
Oracle has announced that support for the Advanced Management Console (AMC) will continue until October 2024. After this date, there will be no further updates, and customers are urged to migrate to the Java Management Service (JMS). JMS, introduced in 2021, is a native service of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) that offers advanced functionalities, including Java migration analysis, JVM tuning recommendations, and security analysis for Java libraries.
Oracle JDK LTS Updates under NFTC
Oracle reminded users that JDK 17 is nearing the end of its permissive licensing period, following the plan and schedule announced in September 2021. Updates for JDK 17 released after September 2024 will be available under the Java SE OTN license, similar to current licenses for Java 8 and 11. Oracle encourages users to migrate to Oracle JDK 21 to continue using the NFTC license terms.
