Spanish SMEs and digitalization: A strong commitment to Generative AI

Small and medium-sized Spanish businesses (SMEs) are leading the way in digitalization compared to their European counterparts in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. According to a recent study conducted by YouGov for IONOS, 88% of SMEs in Spain consider digitalization as a crucial factor for the viability of their businesses, a sentiment that has remained consistent since last year.

Adoption of Generative AI

The study reveals a significant interest from Spanish SMEs in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations, with 65% considering its use and 22% already implementing it or exploring its adoption. These tools, such as ChatGPT, are not only seen as a technological innovation but as an emerging necessity to remain competitive in an ever-evolving market.

Barriers and Challenges in Digitalization

Despite the widespread enthusiasm for digitalization and AI, Spanish SMEs still face significant challenges. Lack of technical knowledge is a major barrier for 61% of companies, while cost remains the biggest obstacle for 68%. Additionally, inflation has been cited as a secondary but considerable impediment, affecting 62% of SMEs in their digital transition.

Investment in Technology and Security

The commitment to digitalization extends to investment in technology infrastructure, especially in security. Key areas of focus include cloud storage and data management, with 47% of SMEs prioritizing these solutions. Furthermore, 33% are investing in improving IT security and data protection, recognizing the importance of cybersecurity in an increasingly threatened digital landscape.

Future Perspectives

IONOS CEO Achim Weiß emphasizes the importance of digitalization as a fundamental foundation for business success in the modern era, especially with the AI revolution underway. According to Weiß, “If you don’t base your business model on a digital platform, you could soon disappear from the market.”

Study Conclusions

The study also highlights the positive impact that digitalization can have on customer acquisition and satisfaction, with 84% of SMEs recognizing its utility in these aspects. Additionally, digitalization is expected to influence significant revenue growth for 81% of respondents.

In conclusion, Spanish SMEs are showing a firm and continued commitment to digitalization and the adoption of new technologies like generative AI. Despite facing financial and technical barriers, the optimism and willingness to invest in digitalization suggest a promising future for the small and medium-sized business sector in Spain.
