In an ambitious bid to strengthen the digital infrastructure of Galicia, Galnix, an initiative led by cloud.gal, Rede Aberta, and Norvoz Telecom, is gearing up to reestablish the neutral point of connectivity in the Galician region. The previous neutral point dates back to 2005, as per the CESGA website when the birth of GALNIX was also announced. This pioneering project not only promises to transform Internet access in Galicia but also to boost cybersecurity and reduce latency in digital communication.
A Project with Strong Institutional Support
With financial backing from the Instituto Galego de Promoción Económica (Igape) and the support of 26 Galician institutions and companies, Galnix emerges as a large-scale initiative that will position Galicia at the forefront of connectivity in Spain. The estimated investment for this ambitious project reaches 2.1 million euros, reflecting the Galician community’s commitment to innovation and digital transformation.
Less Latency, Greater Security
Located in Santiago de Compostela, the new Galnix neutral point aims to reduce the distance data must travel on the Internet by up to 75%, a significant improvement that will optimize browsing speed and strengthen interconnectivity among local operators. Additionally, this proximity will allow for more effective monitoring and management of data traffic, enhancing network security throughout the community.
Benefits Beyond Connectivity
Beyond improving Internet access and security, the Galnix project has a strong focus on sustainability. By reducing the energy consumption necessary for data transfer and incorporating a photovoltaic energy generation system, the initiative aims to minimize the carbon footprint of the digital infrastructure in Galicia.
Driving Digital Transformation
The establishment of Galnix will not only benefit intra-community data traffic but will also serve as a catalyst for the development of smart cities, telemedicine, and e-commerce in Galicia. By enhancing connectivity, the implementation of innovative solutions in smart mobility, remote medical services, and online sales platforms will be facilitated, benefiting both urban and rural areas.
An Advisory Council for Neutrality and Facilitation
To ensure its role as a facilitator in the Internet ecosystem in Galicia, Galnix will establish an Advisory Council composed of representatives from industrial clusters, the telecommunications sector, and professional organizations. This body will provide consultancy and advice, highlighting the project’s commitment to neutrality and collective drive towards digital innovation.
With the establishment of Galnix, Galicia will not only enhance its digital infrastructure but will also position itself as a leader in the adoption of advanced connectivity technologies, marking a milestone in the region’s digital transformation and laying the groundwork for a more connected, secure, and sustainable future.
