59% of Spanish companies have suffered a ransomware attack so far this year.

Year after year, companies’ awareness of cybersecurity is growing, as is the investment in this area, but this does not mean that they should let their guard down. Among all the threats circulating, ransomware represents the greatest risk for companies, although it should also be noted that the frequency of attacks has decreased in the last two years.

With each attack they launch, hackers are improving their methods, so it is crucial that security personnel stay up to date. It is important for companies to analyze their level of vulnerability in order to adopt a proactive defensive strategy. This includes the use of managed detection and response solutions to avoid becoming a victim. According to NuuBB data, 50% of companies are destined to suffer a ransomware attack. Additionally, the cost of releasing the encrypted data continues to rise, averaging at $2 million.

In 2024, France reported the highest rate of ransomware attacks, with 74% of respondents indicating they had experienced an attack in the last year. This was followed by South Africa with 69% and Italy with 68%. On the other end of the spectrum, the lowest attack rates were recorded by Brazil (44%), Japan (51%), and Australia (54%). Overall, nine countries showed a decrease in attack rates compared to 2023, including Spain, which reported a 59% attack rate so far this year, down from 77% the previous year.

Furthermore, 99% of organizations that suffered ransomware attacks were able to identify the root cause of the attack. For the second consecutive year, vulnerability exploitation was the most common cause of these incidents.

To enhance cyber resilience and active defense, it is essential to establish clear security policies with effective preventive measures. Keeping operating systems, applications, and software up to date, combined with appropriate defense solutions, will keep computer systems protected against threats. Installing cybersecurity solutions with advanced technology is fundamental to keep pace with the technology used by cybercriminals.

Implementing a robust backup strategy provides a guarantee that data will not be lost, significantly reducing downtime in the event of data hijacking. Effective backup is the most effective protective measure against cyberattacks.

In the event of an attack, defining a protocol for mitigating damages is essential. Knowing how to act at the right moment is crucial to minimize the consequences of an attack.

Employee awareness and training are also key aspects of cybersecurity. Companies should encourage executives to collaborate closely with human resources and communication departments to design effective awareness strategies. Organizing training sessions, distributing educational materials, and conducting security drills are essential to increase employee awareness of best digital practices.
