Experts from Kaspersky warn about security risks on public networks during the 2024 Paris Olympics
Kaspersky experts have revealed that nearly 25% of free Wi-Fi hotspots in Paris have serious security deficiencies. This analysis, conducted in the lead-up to the upcoming Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, shows that many of these networks have weak or non-existent encryption, exposing users to the risk of personal and financial data theft. Only 6% of the networks use the latest security protocol, WPA3.
Thousands of tourists will attend the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be the first Summer Games held in person after the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions. In light of this major event, analysts from Kaspersky’s GReAT (Global Research and Analysis Team) have assessed the security of open Wi-Fi networks available to visitors.
Wi-Fi Network Analysis in Paris
Experts analyzed 47,891 Wi-Fi signal records in popular locations and Olympic venues in Paris, identifying 24,766 unique Wi-Fi access points. They found that a quarter of these networks had serious security vulnerabilities. These access points either lacked proper encryption or had none at all, making them susceptible to interception and decryption attacks.
Furthermore, nearly one in five networks were configured with WPS, an outdated and easy-to-compromise algorithm. This fact increases the risk of attacks that could result in data loss. Surprisingly, only 6% of the analyzed networks used the latest security protocol, WPA3.
Risks and Recommendations
Amin Hasbini, Head of META Research Unit at Kaspersky’s GReAT, warns about the risks: “Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the opportunity presented by the Olympics to set up fake access points or compromise legitimate networks. Open and improperly configured Wi-Fi networks allow for the theft of passwords, credit card details, and other sensitive data.”
To protect oneself when using public Wi-Fi networks, Kaspersky recommends using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This encryption prevents cybercriminals from intercepting data, even on insecure networks, ensuring that personal and financial information remains protected.

Activate the firewall: Ensure that your device’s firewall is active to block unauthorized access.
Use strong passwords: Use strong and unique passwords, and enable two-factor authentication.
Keep software updated: Regularly update your operating system, applications, and antivirus software.
Disable file sharing and AirDrop: Prevent unauthorized access by disabling these functions on your device.
